An All-Rounder from the Northwest Master Frame Builder - Bill Davidson is the acknowledged grand master of Pacific Northwest frame builders. He has built beautiful bikes in Seattle since 1973, and still keeps his hand in the frame shop business. This steel Davidson Double Century 700c frame dates from the 1990s, but has had periodic component upgrades, and has been ridden only around 500 miles since its gorgeous Radiance repainting (by Davidson), which is orange glow over sterling silver (Radiance is used by many high-end auto detailers). The paint job alone would likely cost over $1,000 today. This bike has proven its all-rounder label by the many different kinds of riding that we have done with it. For example:
- Stripped down and with lighter wheels, it has been used in endurance races, including the Washington cross-state Cannonball and S2S races, time trials, and RAMROD. It weighed at most 39 pounds in this configuration.
- With 48-spoke wheels and knobby tires, it was used for mountain rides on unimproved dirt roads - a fun gravel bike before anyone was using that term. The front fork and seat stay spacing will accept knobbies up to at least 700x40mm.
- With the addition of a front lowrider rack, fenders, and six water bottles, it has been on heavily loaded tours around the western US and New England.
- We used it as a year-round commuter bike for seven years, when both of us worked near each other in downtown Seattle.
- It has been used on many cycling events, club rides, and multi-day supported tours.
- It has been on pub/restaurant runs, rides to meetings, and visits to friends.
