2013 Santana Team Scandium Coupled
Date: JUN 30 Ad ID: BENSH
When my husband became an avid cyclist almost 40 years ago, I knew that if I wanted to see him on the weekends, I had to get on a bike. Since I am afraid to ride a single bike on the streets, that bike had to be a tandem. In 2007, we took our first self-guided tandem tour in Ireland on a rented bike. We had an amazing time, but since the bike was a rental, it wasn’t a perfect fit. We went to Sardinia on another self-guided cycling tour, but the bike they provided wasn't geared low enough for the hills of that lovely island. After the trip to Sardinia, we realized that if we wanted to continue tandeming in other countries, we needed our own travel tandem that fitted us properly and that we could trust, a bike that was made for us that we could take with us on our trips. We had a coupled steel Co-Motion for a while. It was a great bike, but ready to ride, it weighed 52 pounds. Part of that weight is the heavy–though practical–S&S couplers that hold the frame together. We decided to get a lighter bike. We tried out a couple of bikes, but were not happy with them. Then we tried the Santana Team Scandium and were sold. It was an easy choice; the Team Scandium rode as smoothly as a steel bike but weighed about 20 pounds less than our Co-Motion. The frame’s combination of Scandium alloy and carbon fiber reduces weight and produces a sure, smooth ride. And Santana’s couplers are both lighter and more sleek than S&S couplers; you can hardly tell it’s a coupled bike. The Co-Motion traveled in two suitcases; this bike travels in a single case. We had a local tandem-focused shop build us the bike you see before you. We also purchased Santana’s airline-approved suitcase, complete with die-cut layers of foam for easy assembly and disassembly of the bike. Since then, we took the bike to Croatia, Norway, France, and many regions of Italy. My husband–on one occasion with our son–has assembled and disassembled it in hotel rooms, laundry rooms, gardens, alleys, yards, and garages. It is a fantastic bike. We know you’ll enjoy it as much as we have. Facts and Features:
- Shimano Ultegra triple gearing with a bash guard in place of the big chainring (originally a 52t). The bash guard could easily be replaced with a third chainring.
- Rear derailleur: Shimano XTR (RD-M971)
- Front derailleur: Shimano XT
- Santana Airliner SafeCase is included. This case was originally $1,000. It provides die-cut foam to keep the bike parts from crashing into each other.
- Spinergy tandem specific wheelset with Continental Gatorskin 32mm tires
- Gates belt instead of timing chain: no grease, no noise, no stretch.
- Thudbuster stoker seatpost. This is hugely important.
- 256mm rear disk brake. Bike comes with a spare rotor.
- White Rock rear rack
- Front bars: carbon fiber risers.
- Headset preload keeper: headset stays preloaded even when captain’s stem is removed.
- Ti Fly captain’s saddle
- Ti Butterfly stoker’s saddle
- Captain’s height: 5’11”. Stoker’s height: 5’6”. Good adjustability for each to be a few inches shorter or taller.
- Ti bottle cages
- Spare derailleur hanger
- Pedals not included
- Bought new in 2013
- Both suitcase wheels (not the bike wheels) have flat spots from being dragged sideways. The suitcase will roll more smoothly if they're replaced.
- The frame and fork's clear paint has scratches and areas showing oxidation. There are no structural flaws. See photos.
- Various steel parts, like the tension adjusters at the top of the downtube, are slightly corroded but completely functional.
