Co-Motion Java 2014 Rohloff
Date: May 24 Ad ID: JPLAN
This Co-Motion Java tandem bike has been thoughtfully built with premium components for outstanding performance, comfort, and durability. The color pattern is #29 metallic pewter gray fading to #30 metallic black, top to bottom. This is our 3rd tandem starting with Santana’s 11th build in 1978, a Co-Motion Java in 1996, and this beauty in 2014.
This tandem is fast on the road and stable on gravel with its 50mm 29er tires. With a 14-speed Rohloff Speedhub, it has a very wide effective wheel diameter (EWD) range of 23 to 119 inches giving you speeds of 5.4 mph to 28.5 mph with a crank cadence of 80 rpm. Each flick of the wrist gives you a 13.6% change – every one of the 13 steps! All of this is done with only one drive “chainring” and one hub sprocket with super-quiet Gates belts. The best part is when you bring the bike back home all nasty from riding on gravel and dirt roads, just get out the hose and wash it down – maybe a soapy sponge if you found some mud on your route. No oiling a chain and all the bearings are sealed. The only “lubrication” that the belts need is a simple silicone spray every 500 to 1,000 miles, depending on what you have been riding on.
In 2021, all the gearing and belts were replaced, and the Rohloff hub was serviced at Cycle Monkey. They only have about 800 miles on them (see the paragraph below to explain that low number.) This Spring, I changed the tires, tubes and brake pads and the oil in the Rohloff. Another great feature of this tandem is HYDRAULIC BRAKES! You will love them!
Like many older tandem riders, my wife and I are parting with this wonderful tandem due, in my case, to my left hip replacement and gluteus medius tendon repair surgery last year. While actually riding my tandem is fine, I can’t handle the mounting/dismounting side loading. (Not giving up riding, we just ordered 2 Azub trikes to keep cycling!)
While the tandem is currently setup for a 5’8” captain and 5’1” stoker, the bike’s adjustable setup can accommodate a range of heights. The “stand-over” height for the captain is about 30.5” and 25.5” for the stoker (see photos). The frame is Co-Motion’s small size.
This bike is in excellent condition and has been lovingly maintained. It’s ready for its next home with long-distance touring, speedy club rides, exploring gravel country roads, cross-country trails, or casual outings.
